You read the same paragraph three times and none of it went in. That happens to almost everyone now and then, and it rarely means anything is wrong with you.
If trouble concentrating is constant or gets in the way of daily life, talk to a professional. This post covers the ordinary days, with seven common reasons and a small thing to try for each.
1. The task is too big to start
«Study chemistry» is a pile, and a pile gives your attention nowhere to land. Shrink it to the next visible step, like «read pages 12 to 14» or «write the first paragraph». The guide on using Pomodoro when you keep putting things off goes further.
2. Your phone is within reach
Even face down, a phone on the desk invites a glance, and getting back into the task takes longer than the glance did. Put it in another room for one block and check it at the break.
3. Open tabs and open loops
Unfinished things in your head compete for attention, and so does a crowded screen. Before you start, write every nagging thought on a sheet of paper and close the tabs this block doesn’t need.
4. You’re tired, hungry or have been sitting for hours
Attention can’t be forced on, and a tired brain drifts whatever your character is like. Take a proper break with water, a short walk and some daylight, then come back for a shorter block.
5. The room is noisy in unpredictable ways
Steady noise rarely pulls you away. Sudden sounds do, like a voice, a door or a notification. A steady background smooths those out, and brown noise, pink noise and rain are the usual choices. If you can’t decide, open the Pomodoro Finder and keep the one you stop noticing after a few minutes.
6. You’re trying to focus for too long at once
If you expect two hours of perfect focus, every wobble feels like failure. Start with 15 or 25 minutes and move up once that feels easy. The guide on how to concentrate for longer builds from 25/5 to 50/10 and beyond.
7. There’s no clear end in sight
Work without edges is tiring. Knowing the bell will ring in 25 minutes is often enough to quiet the urge to check something else, so use a timer.
Start with one
You don’t need to fix all seven. Pick the one that sounds most like today, change that, and start a free Pomodoro timer.
