Plenty of people try Pomodoro once, decide it isn’t for them and stop. Often the settings were the problem. Before you give up, change one of these.
The bell keeps interrupting you
If 25 minutes ends just as you get going, the block is too short for this task. Move up to 50/10 or 90/15, or set your own with Custom in the timer.
You drift long before the bell
If you lose the thread after ten minutes, 25 is too long for today. Try 15/5. Short wins still count, and you can lengthen the block later.
Breaks pull you out of the task
If every break becomes half an hour on your phone, make it physical with water, a stretch or a short walk, and stop when the break time is up.
Your tasks are the wrong size
A block works best with a task that fits inside it. «Write the thesis» doesn’t fit, and «write the methods paragraph» does. Split big jobs before you start the timer.
You treat it like a rule
Pomodoro is a tool you can bend. If you’re in good flow when the bell rings, keep going for a few minutes and then take your break. Do take it.
The room works against you
Voices and notifications break concentration whatever the timer says, and a steady sound makes the timer easier to follow. Read about brown noise or compare sounds in the Pomodoro Finder.
One experiment for this week
Change a single thing, either the length, the break or the sound, and run it for three days. Keep it if it’s better, and change something else if it isn’t. The full walkthrough is in what the Pomodoro Technique is and how to adapt it.
